FAQ

Where are you located?

We’re nestled in the countryside at 396 County Road 1838, Arab, Alabama — right in the heart of North Alabama farm country.

We're an easy and beautiful drive from several nearby towns:

-Huntsville: just 45 minutes south on Hwy 231 — the perfect Saturday road trip

-Guntersville: only 25 minutes west on Hwy 69, just over the lake

-Cullman: about 35–40 minutes east on Hwy 69, straight across the county

-Birmingham: a peaceful hour drive north via I-65 — bring a cooler and make a day of it!

Look for the white vinyl fence, our sign on the mailbox, and the barn in the distance. You will most likely be greeted by a few farm dogs and kids.

Whether you’re local or making a trip out of it, we’ll be here with fresh goods, fresh air, and a warm welcome.

Where’s your storefront?

Right in our garage — seriously!

We’ve turned part of our family garage into a little farm store, stocked with all the good stuff: raw milk, eggs, produce, and whatever else is fresh that week. It’s simple, honest, and straight from the source — just the way we like it. You’ll pull up, grab what you need, and maybe catch us working in the yard or feeding animals. No fancy aisles, no automatic doors — just real food from real folks, served up with a smile (and maybe a muddy boot print or two).

Is your milk Raw? What does that mean?

Yep, it sure is!

Raw milk means it hasn’t been pasteurized, homogenized, or processed. It comes straight from the cow (or goat), chilled, and ready to enjoy — full of natural cream and goodness. It’s how folks used to drink it back in the day.

Why does it say "pet consumption" on the label?

In Alabama, the only way to sell raw milk is to adhere to their regulations for it, which means it must be labeled as pet consumption. If you would like further information about the sells of raw milk, we recommend you reach out or check out www.realmilk.com.

How do I store raw milk, and how long does it last?

Keep it cold — like, back-of-the-fridge cold. Most folks say it tastes best within 7-10 days, but we’ve had it last longer if stored right. Properly handled raw milk doesn't actually go bad, it just transforms naturally into its new stage. That souring is the work of those natural and beneficial enzymes at work.

You can also freeze it if you need to hang onto it a bit or process it into a new dairy item such as yogurt or cheese.

Store bought milk bothers me, will raw milk?

You’re not alone — we hear this all the time. Many folks who struggle with store-bought milk find their way to raw milk. That’s because raw milk still has its natural enzymes and beneficial bacteria, which help with digestion. Pasteurization removes those, along with some nutrients, making it harder for some people to tolerate.

We don’t just sell it — we live it.

Our daughter is highly lactose intolerant, but she enjoys dairy in raw form without any issues. For many, real milk from healthy animals makes all the difference.

What happens when milk is pasteurized?

Pasteurization means heating milk to high temperatures to kill off bacteria — the good and the bad. While it can help extend shelf life, it also wipes out many of the natural things that make milk special: beneficial bacteria, enzymes that help with digestion, and some heat-sensitive vitamins.

One of those enzymes is lactase, which helps your body break down lactose, the natural sugar in milk. When milk is pasteurized, the lactase gets destroyed — and that’s a big reason why so many people feel lactose intolerant when drinking store-bought milk or products.

How do you keep things clean and safe?

We take cleanliness seriously — because what we sell goes on our table too. Every jar of milk, every egg, every product is handled with care, using clean tools, sanitized surfaces, and hands that know their job. We clean and sanitize our equipment after every use, monitor temperatures daily, monitor the health and welfare of our animals and stick to simple, safe routines that keep both our food and our family healthy.

If it’s not good enough for our kids, it’s not leaving the farm.

Are you practicing sustainable farming and husbandry?

You bet we are. We farm with the future in mind — rotating crops, building healthy soil, and raising our animals with care and respect. No shortcuts, no junk. Just honest, hands-on work that keeps our land, animals, and community thriving.

We believe in being good stewards of what we’ve been given — tending the land and caring for our animals so they can give their best in return: rich soil, happy livestock, and real food you can trust.

If we sell it, you can bet it’s on our own table too.

Can we visit the farm?

Absolutely — we love having folks out to the farm! This is one reason we open on Saturdays so you can swing by, soak in the fresh air, and get your fresh shopping done all in one trip. Check out our calendar for our hours.

Feel free to bring the whole family — our farm is kid-approved and full of things to explore.

We do ask that you leave your pets at home (our animals appreciate it… especially Hank 🐾).

Want a tour or a one-on-one chat? Just let us know and we’ll set something up. While we aren’t currently booking group field trips or extracurricular visits (we’ve got a few big farm projects in the works), we’ll do our best to come to you when we can. Reach out if you’d like to see if we can bring the farm to your activity or event!

How do you decide on your local vendors?

We partner with folks who farm and produce like we do — with care, honesty, and respect for the land, animals, and people they serve. Every vendor we work with has to align with our farm’s values and practices: no shortcuts, no junk, and no cutting corners.

If it’s not raised, grown, or made with the same intention and integrity we put into our own work, it doesn’t make the cut. We ask the hard questions, visit the farms, and make sure they met our standards— because if we’re putting our name next to it, it has to be Bare Bottom Farms approved.

How do I get on the membership list?
